Como es habitual, GIAP becará única y exclusivamente a un artista indígena local para que se integre a la residencia.
El programa de actividades y contenidos, así como el manual de llegada e informaciones prácticas, serán enviados individualmente a los postulantes. Los seleccionados deben abonar un adelanto del 25% para hacer efectiva la reserva de su plaza. Podemos enviar cartas de invitación, emitir certificados de participación y recibos.

OPEN CALL (English)
Our next residency is titled «Creative Ecologies and Decolonial Futurities». It will take place in San Cristobal de Las Casas from July 22 to 31 and it will be coordinated by GIAP (Research group in art and politics) and TJ Demos (University of California – Santa Cruz).
The call is directed at artists and art researchers from around the world, who are interested in reflecting on the potentials of aesthetics in environmental politics, as well as in familiarizing with ideas of ‘future’, in a decolonial and emancipatory perspective.
The program includes seminars with GIAP (Research Group in Art and Politics), Professor TJ Demos, and local guests. It will involve some field trips (one towards the interior of the forest, at a site of environmental/social interest) and many other activities, such as meetings with Mayan thinkers, artists, and gallerists.

The participation includes:
– 10 days structured program with seminars and meetings
– 11 nights accommodation (with kitchen and wifi)
– Access to media library and GIAP’s art collection
– Transfers outside the city
– Some food and coffee breaks between sessions

The list of activities and contents will be sent to succesful applicants. Participation fees are covered by each artist / researcher. Those selected must pay a 25% advance to make their reservation effective. We can send invitation letters, participation certificates and invoices, when needed.
GIAP will grant only a local indigenous artist with a full scholarship to participate in the residency.

Natalia Arcos
Natalia Arcos has a Degree in Theory and Art History from the University of Chile; is Master of Contemporary Art, Paris IV-Sorbonne University, where she was the first latin- american accepted. As an independent curator, she has done twenty exhibitions in Chile, Argentina, Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, England, and Greece. From 2008 to 2013, she was Programming Director of the Chilean Television Channel specialized in art, ARTV. Since 2013, is a founding member of GIAP, Research Group in Art and Politics, where she develops research related to aesthetic autonomy. Currently, she manages CASA GIAP, a center of residences for artists and researchers in Chiapas, México and organizes an exhibition about Zapatista Art for Casa de las Américas, Cuba.
Alessandro Zagato
Alessandro Zagato has a PhD in Sociology from Maynooth University, Ireland. He collaborates with the European Research Council project “Egalitarianism: Forms, Processes, Comparisons” led by Professor Bruce Kapferer at the University of Bergen, Norway. He is author of “The Event of Charlie Hebdo: Imaginaries of Freedom and Control“, Berghahn Books (2015). Some recent publications include: (2018) “State and Warfare in Mexico. The Case of Ayotzinapa” in Social Analysis; (2018) “The Festival “Comparte por la Humanidad”. Aesthetics and poetics of rebellion in the Zapatista movement ” in Revista Páginas Vol. 9; “After Ayotzinapa: building autonomy in a civil war.” In Roarmag, January 5, 2016. Alessandro is columnist at Konkret Media (Los Angeles) for the section “Mexican Diaries”. He is founder of the Research Group in Art and Politics (GIAP), and of the center of residences for artists and researchers CASA GIAP.
TJ Demos (Guest)
T.J. Demos is Professor in the Department of the History of Art and Visual Culture, at University of California, Santa Cruz, and Founder and Director of its Center for Creative Ecologies. He writes widely on the intersection of contemporary art, global politics, and ecology and is the author of numerous books, including Against the Anthropocene: Visual Culture and Environment Today (Sternberg Press, 2017); Decolonizing Nature: Contemporary Art and the Politics of Ecology (Sternberg Press, 2016); The Migrant Image: The Art and Politics of Documentary During Global Crisis (Duke University Press, 2013)—winner of the College Art Association’s 2014 Frank Jewett Mather Award—and Return to the Postcolony: Spectres of Colonialism in Contemporary Art (Sternberg Press, 2013). Demos co-curated Rights of Nature: Art and Ecology in the Americas, at Nottingham Contemporary in January 2015, and organized Specters: A Ciné-Politics of Haunting, at the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid in 2014.
